Coal demand has been growing at the rate of 5.5% each year. To meet rising energy needs, India has licensed additional 92,832MW thermal power generation units, targeted to be commissioned before 2015. However, the coal demand and availability shortage gap through till the end of 2010 is forecast to exceed 229 million tonnes. This shortfall is expected to go up to 315 million tonnes by 2012.
